Advantages of Open Coil Heaters

Open Coil Heating Elements

Open coil heating elements remain one of the most popular heating elements in use today. Whether utilizing nickel/chrome or iron-based alloys, open coil heating elements provide controllable electric heat in a variety of residential, commercial and industrial applications.

JenTer Technologies, can produce these heaters on ceramic or mica forms using AWG 16 to AWG 40 gauge wire. 600VAC Maximum. These elements typically contain one or more resistance coils, a thermostat and a thermal fuse. Some complete assemblies will contain voltage dropping coils to provide a low voltage source for PM motors.

FAQs

WHAT IS AN OPEN COIL HEATER?

As the name implies, an open coil heater consists of at least one exposed resistance heating coil and likely a thermostat. Most models also have a thermal fuse. The form may be mica or ceramic, depending on the requirements for the application. In low voltage types of applications, the heater may also contain voltage dropping coils to provide the correct voltage for specific components.

WHAT IS THE TEMPERATURE RANGE OF AN OPEN COIL HEATER?

The alloy used in the manufacturing of the open coil heating element is the determining factor for the temperature range. Standard Alloys can achieve temperatures over 2000°F. We also offer custom alloys to create the temperature range needed for your application.

WHERE ARE OPEN COIL HEATERS USED?

One advantage of the open coil heater build is the ability to achieve higher temperatures. This makes these heating elements a practical solution for both commercial and residential types of appliances and equipment. With their build, the maximum heating capacity is possible due to exposure of the heating element to the surrounding air.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR AN OPEN COIL HEATER TO HEAT UP?

The build of the open coil heater elements means they provide almost instant heat. The choice of the alloy and the specific build of the heater have a direct impact on the speed of the system to provide the desired amount of heat, but typically the heating element coil will be red hot within seconds.

HOW MUCH DO OPEN COIL HEATING ELEMENTS COST?

When developing an estimate for the cost of a custom open coil heating element, we consider the size, alloy, wire gauge, type of form, and the components required based on the specifications provided by our customers.
