Why Choose Kapton®® Heaters and Heating Elements?

Kapton®® flexible film heaters (also known as flex heater) have the same function as silicone mat heaters except they are much thinner (under 0.5mm) and more flexible. These custom-made heaters can be built with similar watt densities and can operate at similar temperatures as silicone heaters.

They are constructed using thin polyimide sheets as insulation with the heating element laminated inside. Advanced circuit imaging and printing gives builders the flexibility to distribute wattage and create many different heat patterns within the same space.

Surface heaters have a wide range of industrial, commercial, and military applications where reliability, cost effectiveness, minimum cross section, resistance to deterioration and basic flexibility are critical.

The Kapton®® heating element can be easily fitted to different material surfaces and guarantee a fast and uniform heat transfer. The uniform thermal distribution of the heaters allows for varying thermal expansions and managing the power with maximum efficiency.

WHAT ARE KAPTON® HEATERS?

One of the best ways to describe a Kapton®® heater is a transparent flex heater. This is similar to a silicone rubber heating element but measuring less than 1.0mm in thickness. Just like the silicone rubber heater, the build includes the interior heating element that is surrounded by transparent polyimide material. It can also be built using an opaque material. The Kapton®® heater can be bonded to other surfaces and offers resistance to moisture, fungus, chemicals, and deterioration even when used in challenging environments and applications.

IS A CONTROL NEEDED FOR A KAPTON® HEATER?

In some applications using a Kapton®® heater, control of the heating process is required. If a PTC (positive temperature coefficient) resistance element is used then the heater generally requires less control depending on the application. These heaters can be built to offer different heating patterns and are often used when precise temperature control is a critical part of the application.

WHAT IS THE TEMPERATURE RANGE OF A KAPTON® HEATER?

There are some options in Kapton®® heater builds and materials that impact the temperature range. The choice of bonding material allows for high temperature ranges of up to 500°F. As a general guideline, they operate in a temperature range comparable to that of silicone rubber heating elements.
